Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) is steadfast in its mission to provide a learning environment that creates globally competitive professionals. The ASEAN Month celebration with the theme Global Festival of Action, held on August 31, 2023, intended to develop a community with comprehensive knowledge of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to achieving it as the Mapúa MCL envisions.

The event welcomed the students with three time-worthy plenary discussions centered on SDGs 9, 11, and 16 and extensive SDG-related displays and projects at the E.T. Yuchengco Lobby.

Mapúa Insititute of Technology at Laguna (MITL) Faculty Member, Ar. Alvin P. Tejada invited everyone to a discovery of knowledge about SDG #11: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) cities and communities. During the plenary session, Ar. Tejada highlighted the target goals of SDG #11 to attain a sustainable community by making human settlements and cities in every community safe, inclusive, sustainable, and storm-resistant. He emphasized that the impact of disasters on communities, infrastructure, and services resulted in high death rates. In addition, for inclusive and sustainable urbanization, it is not only the government’s responsibility but also to activate community involvement by making small changes in our daily lives by managing food waste, walking in dedicated spaces for pedestrians, and more.

The Senior Vice President for Administration and Legal, Atty. Maria Eloisa R. Gan followed the plenary session about SDG #16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, whose message explicitly addressed the subject of freedom of speech and expression through participatory communication. The session with Atty. Gan highlighted the phrases “freedom” and “discipline” and discussed how students have a right to share and express themselves freely in the community while also fostering accountability. The student’s right to freedom of speech and expression must be safeguarded, but we must also be reminded that we are responsible for the consequences of what we do.

As a result of easy access to technology in the modern day, people are now highly technologically literate, especially in using social media. SDG #9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure strived to develop resilient infrastructure, advance sustainable industrialization, and support innovation. Prof. Dennis A. Martillano, a College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) faculty member, launched the conversation concerning this goal. Aligned with SDG #9, the session made the participants analyze the Philippines’ preparedness and standing in the innovation. He stressed that it is time for the Philippines to consider promoting innovation and making infrastructures ready to implement the Internet of Things (IoT) by acknowledging the talents of the Filipinos.

The SDG Global Festival of Action helped students make decisions that will positively impact their communities, freedom, and innovative minds, in line with Mapúa MCL’s mission to create professionals who contribute to the industry and society’s concerns and solutions by the expert application of knowledge.

Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) takes pride in the successful two-day event conducted as part of the ASEAN Month Celebration with the Global Festival of Action theme on August 30-31, 2023. The event focused on advancing cross-cultural dialogue, developing community, and increasing knowledge of the ASEAN Sustainable Development Goals among students and professors. The festival promised an educational experience for all Mapúans with various plenary discussions and entertainment.

Last August 30 and 31, 2023, Mapúa MCL conducted a two-day event in celebration of the ASEAN Month with the theme, Global Festival of Action. The activities aimed to advance cross-cultural dialogue, develop community, and increase awareness on the different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The festival’s objective was not only to entertain but to be an educational experience for all Mapúans.

Through this event, the Global Mapúa Malayans who have immersed themselves in new cultures made connections with diverse people and introduced our own culture at Arizona State University (ASU) in the USA and Universitas Esa Unggul (UEU) in Jakarta, Indonesia this 2023 was also recognized.  The first day of the ASEAN Month Celebration showcased a series of Sustainable Development Goals Exhibits that highlighted relevant research and projects aligned with the SDGs at the E.T. Yuchengco Lobby, where the Tourism Management Program of E.T. Yuchengco College of Business (ETYCB) students also participated in showcasing their creativity.

During the opening, the Office for External Relations and Global Linkages (OERGL) and the ETYCB recognized the students who actively participated in the immersion programs of Arizona State University (ASU) in Texas, USA and Universitas Esa Unggul (UEU) in Jakarta, Indonesia. Through the Cintana Education alliance, these students were given the opportunity to connect with other cultures and have new global experiences.

The Tourism Management Program Chair Prof. Merle U. Ruiz introduced SDG #12: Responsible Consumption and Production, that increased personal responsibility so that resources never go to waste but are instead recycled. Prof. Ruiz explained the significance of the SDGs throughout the dialogue by using methods other than the traditional linear economy (reduce, reuse, recycle). The Circular Economy (Design, Production, Retail, Consumption, Reuse and repair, Collection, Recycling), a model of production and consumption highlighted by Prof. Ruiz, raised awareness of how vital it is to become more involved with achieving SDG #12 in the way we live through our everyday choices, which could have an impact on every species living on the planet.

To address SDG #3: Good Health and Well-being, Dr. Maschelle Anne S. Nanit, the Mapua MCL School Physician from the Center for Health Services and Wellness, talked comprehensively about its specific targets as well as the government’s efforts to ensure that the targets are achieved by 2030. Dr. Nanit undoubtedly neutralized the taboo around the open discussion of reproductive and maternal health, which is particularly important for ensuring good health. Infectious diseases were emphasized throughout the session, but more so, the non-communicable illness that people are unaware of is suicide. Dr. Nanit stressed in the end with a message of hope that individuals should maintain healthy lives and utilize available resources.

Inequality persists in today’s world in all areas of life. Prof. Nathan Daniel V. Sison, a Faculty Member of the College of Arts and Science, shed light through SDG #10: Reduced Inequalities on this persistent social problem by identifying inequality’s underlying causes and categorizing it as a long-standing problem also prevalent in history. Inequality has many forms, conditioned on how it affects us physically, financially, or even our social standing. But the fundamental question he raised in his remarks was, “Can we achieve equality for everyone?” He boldly responded, “Yes,” but only if economic, political, and social policies are created globally, focusing on the needs of marginalized and disadvantaged communities. Prof. Nathan further pointed out that to minimize inequality, we must empower what we currently have through access to information.

Even though the Global Festival of Action has just started, it has already developed into an invaluable opportunity for professionals to educate students on the Sustainable Development Goals, which promoted action to be a healthy, empowered, and sustainable consumer. After all the sessions the students attended, they were encouraged to visit the ETY lobby to write and think of their SDG Commitment Goal.

Exchanging Culture, History, and New Global Experiences: Mapua MCL Students Embark on Tri-City Tour

Exchanging Culture, History, and New Global Experiences:
Mapua MCL Students Embark on Tri-City Tour

By: Ivana Ruth Vidal

In a remarkable display of cultural exchange and global engagement, B.S. Business Administration students, Princess Sarah Casas and Mark Laurens Corales embarked on an enriching tri-city tour in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This immersive journey was made possible under Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL)’s student mobility program, EXCHANGE, Exchanging Culture, History, And New Global Experiences. It provided a unique opportunity for the students to broaden their horizons, deepen their understanding of diverse cultures, and foster meaningful connections with their peers from around the region.

The EXCHANGE program aims to promote international understanding and collaboration by providing students with opportunities to learn and experience diverse cultures firsthand. Through this initiative, students gain valuable insights into global perspectives, expand their professional networks, and develop a deeper appreciation for the richness and diversity of the world around them.

It was a rare opportunity to participate in, so I immediately grabbed the chance and prepared everything I could as this was also my first time travelling outside the country,” Casas shared. Corales, who previously participated in Univeritas Esa Unggul’s Immersion Program last July 2023, said that it was an opportunity that should not be missed.

Held November 3-12, the mobility tour was meticulously designed to immerse students in the cultural and academic tapestry of Southeast Asia. An integral part of this tour was the inclusion of campus visits and tours at leading universities in each city. These visits provided students with a firsthand look at the academic environments and facilities of Mapúa MCL’s partner institutions, allowing them to compare different educational systems and gain insights into various approaches to teaching and learning.

At each campus, the students were warmly welcomed by the hosts, who provided them with guided tours of the facilities, introduced them to the faculty and staff, and arranged opportunities to interact with current students. These interactions provided students with more understanding of the unique academic cultures and learning experiences offered by each institution.

Corales fondly recalled the beauty of the campuses and their cutting-edge facilities, “After touring the campus, I came to understand how their students would really enjoy attending their classes there.” Casas further elaborated on the immersive learning environment, highlighting designated classrooms that simulate real-world work settings, allowing students to gain practical experience in their chosen field.

The students, joined by Prof. Donn Moreno, the Business Administration Program Chair, visited Taylor’s University, INTI International University, and Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation. Including these tours and visits proved to be a valuable addition to EXCHANGE as it offered students a comprehensive view of higher education in Southeast Asia.

A highlight of the trip was Casas and Corales’ presentation at the 2nd International Youth Conference on Language and Culture (IYCLAC) held at Universitas Esa Unggul in Jakarta, Indonesia. Alongside online presenters, these students had the privilege of sharing their research with an international audience.

Presenting our group’s paper was nerve-wracking yet incredibly rewarding,” Corales reflects. Casas initially found the experience intimidating, but it provided a unique opportunity for these students to step out of their comfort zone. She took pride in her ability to effectively communicate and discuss their research with the other presenters and participants.

Prof. Moreno actively encourages students to take advantage of unique opportunities like this to elevate their research endeavors. Participation in such activities, according to Prof. Moreno, will not only offer students an additional platform to showcase their research but also foster their ability to effectively present their work on an international scale.

Casas enthusiastically encourages fellow students to embrace the opportunity to participate in a student mobility program, emphasizing the invaluable experiences and global perspectives it offers. “Don’t let opportunities such as this slip away,” Casas urges. Echoing this statement, Corales adds, “Jump at the opportunity right away. The learnings and experiences you gain after are like no other.”

Growing the Seeds of Sustainability: Mapúa MCL Tree Planting Activity in Brgy. Cansuso, Cavinti, Laguna

Growing the Seeds of Sustainability: Mapúa MCL Tree Planting
Activity in Brgy. Cansuso, Cavinti, Laguna

By: Ivana Ruth Vidal

In a world grappling with the consequences of climate change, environmental degradation, and loss of biodiversity, the importance of sustainable initiatives cannot be overstated. Recognizing the urgent need to address these global challenges, a tree planting activity was organized in Barangay Cansuso, Cavinti, Laguna on October 25 and November 4, 2023.

Led by the Office for Strategic Partnerships and Global Engagement (OSPGE), this event brought together a total of 131 volunteers, comprising of Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL)’s alumni, employees, and students from the Bachelor of Multimedia Arts and Tourism Management programs. This initiative focused on enhancing local biodiversity and combating deforestation, thereby contributing to the wider objective of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 – Life on Land.

Tree planting emerges as a vital strategy in furthering Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, which prioritizes the safeguarding, restoration, and sustainable utilization of terrestrial ecosystems. In November 2022, OSPGE also led One Tree at a Time in partnership with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office in Sta. Cruz (CENRO Sta. Cruz) and with the assistance of the Siniloan Tenured Migrants Association, wherein 500 seedlings were planted in one of the protected areas in Siniloan, Laguna.

This year’s tree-growing, as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources calls it, was a collaborative effort involving the Mapúa MCL community, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Laguna (PENRO Laguna), and volunteers from Brgy. Cansuso’s community.

A total of 2, 000 fruit-bearing tree seedlings were planted in an area designated under the DENR’s National Greening Program (NGP), fostering environmental resilience, and promoting sustainable land management practices.

NGP is a flagship program of DENR that aims to rehabilitate 1.5 million hectares of denuded forests and non-forest lands nationwide from 2011 to 2028. This program seeks to address the country’s alarming deforestation rate, promote sustainable forest management, and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

On the day of the event, the volunteers came together to plant the seeds of sustainability. The sense of unity and shared purpose was palpable as everyone worked towards a common goal – reviving the land and promoting a healthier environment for current and future generations.

This endeavor is not just a one-time event; it marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. Regular monitoring and maintenance programs were put in place to ensure the survival and growth of the newly planted trees.

Erika Roxas, one of the student volunteers, shared, “Participating in the recent tree-planting activity with my fellow Mapúa MCL students was truly a heartwarming experience. The joy of contributing to the environment while bonding with peers created a sense of fulfillment. To all future participants, I would like to share that volunteering is more than just doing the right thing; it’s about doing the right thing you love. I’ll treasure this memory and I am looking forward to more impactful activities I can volunteer in.”

Through collaborative efforts, education, and sustained commitment, communities, alongside academic institutions, and organizational partnerships, can play a pivotal role in creating a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet. The seeds planted in Cavinti are not just trees; they are symbols of hope, unity, and a shared dedication to preserving life on land for generations to come.
