MCL CGC celebrates Adapting to the Now Normal: Mental Health Month

Last October 2022, the Malayan Colleges Laguna, A Mapua School’s Center for Guidance and Counselling celebrated the Mental Health Awareness Month with different activities and events made to encourage students to talk and learn more about their mental wellness.  

MCL CGC launched the Mental Health Awareness Month with the Online Bulletin, an online platform that serves like a virtual freedom wall where students are write or share about their mental health testimonies. Access the testimonies and inspirational messages via: bit.ly/MHOnlineBulletin

With MCL FLUX (hybrid learning) taking over, this year’s celebration of the Mental Health Awareness Month was also held both online and face-to-face. After two long years of celebrating the event fully online, MCL CGC finally opened the CGC Pay it Forward Booth for College and MCL-SHS students, an on-site interactive booth for Malayans to sing, dance, play games, and have fun with their school mates.

To fulfill MCL CGC’s mission to spread awareness on mental health to everyone, especially the youth, the department held a Seminar on Mental Health Awareness for MCL’s partner schools in partnership with MCL’s Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement (MCL CSCE) ast October 13, 2022 with Ms. Joy P. Tarzona, MCL CGC’s Guidance Counsellor.

Additional to these, MCL CGC also held their Online Kumustahan or Kumusta ka na?: An Online Catching-up Session with MCL via the OneMalayan Online Discord Server where students were able to freely share about their mental health and their tips on surviving student life. The MCL community also joins the Mental Health Awareness Month with the week-long posting of the community’s Mental Health tips on adjusting to the “Now Normal” via Instagram and Facebook Reels.

As part of the month-long celebration for mental health, a webinar titled ‘Preventing Cyber Bullying through Cyber Wellness’ was also held last October 21, 2022 with guest speakers Dr. Darwin C. Rudguin and Atty. Maria Eloisa R. Gan, MCL’s Senior Vice President for Administrative and Legal. Dr. Rugduin explained the medical effects of cyber bullying while Atty. Gan explained the legal side of it.

Finally, last October 24 to 28, 2022 the month-long celebration for Mental Health Awareness was concluded with the Blue Shirt Speaks Day #NoToBullying in which all members of the MCL community were encouraged to wear a blue shirt if they support a bullying-free environment for MCL and for everyone.  

May these initiatives and programs leave a mark for everyone to continuously fight for mental health related issues, just like what Ms. Mabeth B. Francia, Head of MCL CGC said:L “Mental Health is not the responsibility of the professionals alone, but all of us are responsible of each other’s mental health.”
