MCL develops institutional collaboration with Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation

On June 19, 2018, Prof. James Ronald O. Mesina, Director of the Office for External Programs (OEP), visited the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, one of the biggest international private schools in the country and the second biggest IT university in the Asia-Pacific region, to revive the first round of exploratory discussions about the possible institutional linkage between MCL and APU.

In 2014, a delegation from MCL composed of College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) Dean Prof. Khristian G. Kikuchi and former MCL Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Engr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo visited APU and met with EVP for Administration Mr. Gurpardeep Singh to discuss possible opportunities for regional partnership.

“It was very positive and everybody was excited to proceed with the next steps. The opportunities identified include faculty and student exchange since APU is really boosting its ranking in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), and they are really eager to boost the mobility students in the Asian region. However, the talks were suspended after we entered the transition to K-12. We postponed our plans with APU since many things on faculty recruitment and retention became uncertain until such time we were over with the transition,” stated Prof. Mesina.

This year, the talks continue and APU maintains the positive response for the proposal of institutional collaboration in student and faculty exchange programs, twinning of MCL and APU’s college programs, and socio-cultural exchange activities.

APU’s 6,000 international students are enrolled in programs where they are expected to visit Asian countries for exposure and cultural immersion. MCL is interested to host them to interact with our students and faculty. In return, APU may host research activities of students and faculty in the fields of IT, Engineering, Business, and Communications.
