MCL hosts PIChE Midyear Symposium

A Southern Luzon symposium for the members of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) - Laguna Chapter was held at Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) last July 29, 2017.

Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) welcomed the members of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) – Laguna Chapter for a Southern Luzon symposium on July 29, 2017.

With the theme “Moving towards Sustainability,” the participants were privileged to hear from four (4) speakers and to be equipped with additional knowledge that would help them as chemical engineers.

Among the speakers was Engr. Flocerfida L. Amaya, ASEAN Eng., who discussed the Life Cycle Assessment of Water Reuse in the Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP).

Engr. Maricris C. Vines, ASEAN Eng., President of PIChE Laguna and National Vice President for PIChE Luzon, started the seminar by acknowledging her fellows who came from Cavite, Batangas, Quezon Province, Metro Manila, Bataan, Pangasinan and Indonesia, among other places.

Present to talk about the “Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Chemicals” was Engr. Nelia G. Granadillos, Environment Control Division Chief of the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC). In her session, she defined GHS and emphasized its importance for both consumers and workers.

“As chemical engineers, we have to protect ourselves. We cannot protect ourselves if we don’t know the danger of chemicals.”

Engr. Granadillos also reminded the employers to develop chemical safety policy and the employees to cooperate with the management, for “prevention is better than cure.”

The second topic was “Soymilk Processing: The Science Behind” by Engr. Bonivie Coleen M. Meer, Acting Process Head of AB Nutribev Plant-Process Department at Asia Brewery Inc. She first introduced the history of soybean and its health benefits, clarifying that it reduces, not cures, health problems.

As a reminder, Engr. Meer informed the audience that soybean, despite its assets, is a health threat since it is part of the Big 8, a group of major allergenic food. She, then, proceeded in detailing the process of producing soymilk.

Engr. Flocerfida L. Amaya, ASEAN Eng., Consultant for Environmental Management at Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP), discussed about Life Cycle Assessment of Water Reuse in LIIP, the cost savings if life cycle analysis is done, its findings, and its recommendations.

“The implementation of industrial ecology can enhance the competitive advantage of the estate in terms of its environmental improvement.”

Lastly, Engr. Vines briefly explained the RA 10912 and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Act for Chemical Engineers, informed the audience how to gain more CPD units and to renew their license, and invited them to attend the ASEAN Engineering Register this November in Thailand and the 79th PIChE National Convention on February 2018 in Alabang.

The speakers answered questions from the participants at the end of their respective talks.
