More than a thousand secondary students from different schools in Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and Muntinlupa gathered at the Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) campus in Cabuyao, Laguna for the yearly MCL Cup that ran from November 24 to 26.
Fifty four participating schools had sent their representatives to battle it out in 10 different competitions.
To make the 2011 event more exciting and in tune with the modern times, MCL’s College of Information Technology (CIT), which organized last year’s Cup, introduced “some modifications.” For last year, two new competitions - the Digital Poster Making and IT Wizards - have been added and the Culinary Challenge has been revived.
IT Wizards, according to Khristian G. Kikuchi, CIT’s associate dean, aims to encourage interest among secondary students about the concepts and importance of IT.
“With respect to the dance competition, [in 2010] judges had hard time giving scores with the variation of dances among schools that participated. This time, we offered street dance. We specifically just categorized it to Street Dance competition,” Mr. Kikuchi said.
The young participants also faced off in Math Wizards, Speech Choice Competition, Science Wizards, Show Choir competition, Cheer Dance competition, and Battle of the Bands.
“MCL supports these types of activities because we believe in holistic development of every individual,” Mr. Kikuchi said. “We are conducting this event annually so that we can share to the community the excellence and virtue in academics and artistic skills competitions.”
The MCL Cup is also an opportunity for the high school students “to have a venue wherein they can compete and at the same time meet other people,” he added.
Southernside Montessori School was declared the over-all champion followed by Sisters of Mary School (Boystown) and Holy Rosary College. They received P30,000, P15,000 and P10,000 worth of items, respectively.
Cash prizes were also given for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placers in the different events.
The Institute for Excellence in Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (I-ExCELL) will be the host and lead organizer of the MCL Cup 2012.
The MCL Cup is an inter-high school competition that aims to test and challenge the brains, technology know-how and artistic skills of participating students as well as promote sportsmanship and camaraderie among them.
