MMA Students Bag Gold Prize in National Video Competition

A group of sophomore Multimedia Arts students emerged triumphant in the “Idol Ko si Rizal” Video Contest for their entry “Transisyonasyon.” The group which was composed by Ivan Descartin, Isaiah Shih, Kevin Peter, Christian de Ramos bagged the Gold Prize among 57 entries in the national competition organized by the National Youth Commission (NYC) last October 27 at the Heroes Hall, Malacañan Palace. The team also got the Most Popular Video award based on facebook voting. President Benigno Aquino III presented the Gold Prize and Most Popular Video awards to the MCL team who was accompanied by their adviser, Prof. Rogelio Valenzuela.
NYC, in coordination with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), launched the contest as part of the 150th birthday anniversary of the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. The short video, which was opened to Filipinos age 15-35 years old, aimed to inculcate in the Filipino youth a sense of pride and nationalism.
The winners were selected by respected artists, filmmakers and public officials in the country including Cesar Montano, former DOT secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta, and film director and producer Pepe Diokno.
The team’s entry started as a classroom project for their FIL014: Masining na Pagpapahayag course. Later the video was selected as part of WikaMALAYAN, an event launched during the commemoration of Buwan ng Wika. Prof. Valenzuela then encouraged the team to submit the video as an entry for the said video contest. This project eventually turned into a national-level winner.
The video title, “Transisyonasyon” is a portmanteau of “transisyon” and “nasyonalismo.” “The term ‘Transiyonasyon’ is related to the transition of one's mindset, from one filled with questions to a cathartic one, for a better grasp of the meaning of nationalism. Rizal is within us all, armed with a quill and a paper, waiting for a wake-up call,” Descartin explained.
“Ang natutunan sa silid-aralan ay dapat ibahagi sa sambayanan. Kaya unawain ang mga aralin, magsaliksik at maging malikhain sa mga gawain,” Prof. Valenzuela added.
This is definitely another milestone for Malayan Colleges Laguna’s “Path to Excellence.”
