St. Scholastica’s College-Westgrove won MCL Cup 2010’s Speech Choir Competition last Nov. 20, with their sparkling display of verve, wit, fluency, and “techsitivity,” placing the Sisters of Mary School – Boystown and Mater Ecclesiae School at 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
This year’s contest theme is “Techsitivity: Being Technology-Responsible.” This is in line with Malayan Colleges Laguna’s (MCL) core values of excellence and virtue. It calls to mind the importance of utilizing technology to improve human lives and not to sacrifice them in the process.
Twelve (12) schools put up amazing performances, merging their personal interpretations and original lines with the poem “Remember When” by James Huggins. The other schools are as follows: San Guillermo Academy, Meridian Educational Institution, St. Gabriel Archangel Academy, Chair of St. Peter School, The Sisters of Mary School-Girlstown, Holy Rosary College, Muntinlupa Science High School, South City Homes Academy, and Morning Star Montessori School Inc.
The Francisco Balagtas Auditorium was packed by MCL students, faculty members, officials, and guests from the participating schools. Everybody was anticipating the last event for MCL Cup 2010. A solemn prayer led by the Humanities and Social Sciences Coordinator Prof. Angelito Platino formally opened the event, followed by the powerful voice of Ana Katrina Ramsey as she sang the Philippine National Anthem. The spirited hosting of Prof. Rachel Joy V. Rojas and MMA student Nathan Medallion sustained the fervor of the participants and audience from start to finish.

The excitement was even magnified by the judges of the event; one of which even did an intermission number in front and shared meaningful thoughts on stage. Mr. Njel de Mesa, a multiple Palanca awardee and multi-talented artist-performer, rendered original song and dance numbers. This turned the atmosphere into something closely resembling a concert. The audience was also very participative, gamely coming up on stage to join the contest initiated by Mr. de Mesa himself. In fact, all the judges are performers and have been part of award-winning play productions. They are Ms. Regine May Martinez of the University of Los Banos and MCL’s very own, Prof. Rogelio Valenzuela.
The competition went smoothly; kudos to the organizers and student volunteers of the event. After the announcement of winners seamlessly came the awarding and closing ceremony of the MCL Cup 2010.
