“Teachers could have been using the CLIL method in their teaching but may be unaware of it.” This was the remark given by Ms. Digi Ann Castillo, Programmes Officer of the British Council, as she presented and explained the concept of Content and Language Integrated Learning or CLIL to about 20 teachers from different academic institutions who attended the British Council’s Teachers’ Club Workshop on “Content and Language Integrated Learning,” held at British Council, Ortigas Centre, Pasig City, on July 31, 2008.
Six faculty from the English, Science and Math Clusters of Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) attended the said event to gain an overview of the CLIL method and determine how it could enhance their existing teaching techniques and strategies.
The CLIL Method, which espouses that instruction and learning takes place through a language other than students’ first language, has the following core features: it has multiple focus, happens in a safe and enriching learning environment, is authentic, involves active learning, utilizes scaffolding, and enhances cooperation among the learners. It highlights the idea that Math, Science, and English Teachers should work together to support language teaching in a content class and content teaching in a language class.
When asked about her comments, Prof. Marichu Figuracion, a new Math teacher at MCL, expressed that through the workshop, she realized the importance of integrating technical subject matter in the teaching and learning of language.
Prof. Jhona Niem of the English cluster further stated that there are a lot of opportunities where integration can be done. These just need to be thought out and planned carefully.
Other faculty members who attended the seminar-workshop were Professors Michael Baylon, Fe Dampil, Remilyn Mondez, and Ma. Rovilla Sudaprasert.
