Meanwhile, the same Literature and Creative Arts classes under Prof. Recillo launched a Lantern-making Contest last November 26, 2007.   The 14 entries to the contest were put up on the same day and were viewed until the end of the Christmas Season.   The contest coincided with the arts exhibit and so it became an extension of the said activity.   Thus, aside from celebrating and commemorating the birth of Jesus, the competition also turned out to be an art display as well.   Most of the lanterns were made from native materials and featured symbolisms of the Season.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of our Creator, show how much we treasure our loved ones, and share the Christmas spirit with friends.  Last 18 December 2007, the College Student Councils of Malayan Colleges Laguna organized a Malayan Christmas Party with the theme: “Wizards ng Malayan, Magsama-sama Ngayong Kapaskuhan.”

  MCL  CELEBRATES  YULE  SEASON  
 

The entire community of Malayan Colleges Laguna celebrated the Christmas Season with colorful and fun-filled presentations of the different clusters last 14 December 2007 from 12:30 – 5:00 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Room at the 5th Floor of the Jose Rizal Hall.   Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, President of MCL, graced the affair together with all the other administrators and gave his Yuletide message to everyone.  

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

A  week-long exhibit of photography, literature, and visual and digital arts dubbed as “Les Beaux Arts” was held last 3 -7 December 2007 at the lobby of the E.T. Yuchengco Hall of Malayan Colleges Laguna.   The activity was a collaborative effort of all the Literature and Creative Arts classes, the Digital Photography classes and the Masque Carnival organization. The exhibit served as the final examination of the students in the said classes and featured the paintings, sculptures, architectural pieces, and photographs made by the students.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

December 1, 2007, the MCL track oval was crowded by no less than two thousand expectators as the CHEERDANCE competition marked the last day of the week-long MCL CUP 2007.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

It was expected that The Sisters of Mary School (Boystown) would capture the Over-All Title as their students ripped one award after the other in the weeklong contests of the MCL CUP 2007. They won first place in the Math Wizard Competition and the Choir Competition, ranked second place in the Cheerdance Competition, and placed third in the Science Wizard Competition and Spelling Quiz Bee. All in all, the school placed in the five of the seven events of the MCL CUP 2007.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Diana Joy P. Gernan, a graduating student of Colegio San Agustin – Biñan, was the
overwhelming choice of the 3-member panel of the Board of Judges as the first outstanding orator of MCL CUP for the year 2007 receiving a cash prize of P 3000.00 and a medal for herself, and a trophy for her school while besting other 41 contestants from private and public high schools in Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna in the process. The event was held last November 29, 2007 at the Malayan Colleges Laguna’s Francisco Balagtas Auditorium as part of the annual week-long competitions in the following categories: science, math, oration, spelling, essay writing, choral, and cheerdance.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

The Math Wizard Competition was one of the highlights of the MCL Cup last November 29, 2007. There were 54 participating schools who joined the said competition. Each sent their most talented in Math, if not the best among their Fourth Year High School students, to battle against the wits of other schools’ Math Wizards, ..so to speak. The event started 10:00 in the morning for the Elimination Round where the participants answered Problem Solving questions, to test  their knowledge in Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry and Statistics.  Twelve among fifty four participating schools qualified for the Final Round which was held at the MCL Francisco Balagtas Auditorium in the afternoon. The Final Round consist of Easy, Average and Difficult Questions which were given 15, 30 and 45 seconds (respectively) to answer.  The contest came up  with 3 Winners:

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

The MCL Choir Competition was held last November 28, 2007 at the Francisco Balagtas Auditorium.  This event was participated in by fourteen (14) schools from the region.  All the choirs who came to the event have really prepared with their  acapela pieces for the contest.   The audience were enthralled by the choirs’ sweet voices and were reminded of the Christmas Season that was forthcoming. 

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Last November 27, 2007 the Student Essay Writing Contest was held as a component of the MCL Cup 2007. Forty-three (43) schools participated in the competition that was held at the Francisco Balagtas Auditorium. The competition started promptly at 8:00 in the morning with the roll call of participating schools with its representatives, alternates and coaches. Prof. James Ronald O. Mesina, chair for the Student Essay Writing Competition gave the mechanics of the competition, and the evaluation procedures. The theme for the essay writing was “Enhancing Science and Technology Potentials in Accelerating National Progress”. The theme recognizes the valuable role of science and technology in accelerating national progress and at the same time aims of soliciting intellectual ideas from the youth on how to enhance the same to contribute to the tank of human knowledge and total human development.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Last Nov. 27, 2007, the MCL CUP 2007 Spelling Quiz Bee was held at the MCL Francisco Balagtas Auditorium where over 40 senior high school students from Laguna, Batangas, and Rizal participated. Laguna College San Pablo contestant Arjelyn B. Jose emerged as the champion, followed by Los Banos National High School’s Teuss G. Tolosa, and The Sisters of Mary School’s Simon Nichole F. Mercurio at 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

True to its nature as harbinger of excellence and virtue, Malayan Colleges Laguna held its MCL Cup from November 26 through December 1, 2007 within the premises of its lovely and modern campus. MCL Cup is an annual event that aims to showcase the rich talents and brain power of high school students of Laguna, Batangas, and nearby provinces.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

The much awaited induction of Officers of the Faculty Club transpired on November 12, 2007 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It took place in the new HRM Bar and Restaurant on the second floor of the E.T. Yuchengco Building.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Last November 8, 2007, a Bomb Awareness Seminar and an Emergency Exit Drill was conducted at MCL. The resource persons for the seminar were Superintendent Zimnar Gran, Chief of Police for Cabuyao and Col. Segundino Caunin of Genesis Security. The seminar was attended by the MCL staff, security and janitorial personnel. 

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Last October 27, 2007, Malayan Volunteers, a recognized student organization of Malayan Colleges Laguna participated in Gawad Kalinga World Expo with the theme: One Hope, One Vision, One Global Army Against Poverty. The festival was held at the SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. Selected members of the organization, with some faculty members namely Prof. James Ronald Mesina, Prof. Christine Joanne Desacado, Prof. Aurora Alforte and Prof. Vilma Malabuyoc attended the eco-forum titled “Raising a Healthy Generation”. This forum held at the Cinema 1 of the SM Mall of Asia tackled issues on health and education, and the challenges of Gawad Kalinga in developing GK sites and communities across the country.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

As a celebration of MCL student’s talent in music, an all MCL bands rock concert dubbed “OctobeRock: Tunog Malayan, Isang Sigaw ng Kabataan” was held last 27 October 2007 at the MCL Basketball Courts. The free concert was organized by the Center for Student Development in cooperation with the Center for Student Activities and Discipline and the student organization United by Sound (U-Sound). Malayan Dance Company (MDC) opened the concert with a dance number to the tune of “Sumunod, Sumayaw.” After which, the students and their guests experienced the electrifying performances of Log-In, Oakwood, The Final Last Second, Childhood Chucks, Misanthrophy, Taken, Santa Banana, Vocal Sin, and Beho. “The Boon,” a band composed of MCL faculty and staff namely Mr. Relly C. Palis, Dra. Maria Margarita B. Malabanan, Prof. Henry L. Paz, and Prof. Rolando V. Bitor also performed to the great delight of the crowd.

 
 
 
     
   
   
 

Living out MCL’s personal care to each and every student, last 11 October 2007 the Center for Student Activities and Discipline, in cooperation with the Center for Student Development and the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, held the first part of an academic intervention program dubbed “Success Coach.” The seminar-workshop was held at the Francisco Balagtas Auditorium and attended by MCL students whose term weighted average (TWA) for the 1st term of 2007-2008 range from 3.51-5. 

 
 
 
     
   
   
     
 

Last October 5-6, 2007, Geronimo Lomeda, President of the MITL-College Student Council and Ms. Joyce Maritoni Urbina, Editor-in-Chief of Malayan Chronicle, attended the 3rd Provincial Convention of Student Leaders at Slide and Dive Resort, Victoria, Laguna. The convention was sponsored by the Office of the Governor of Laguna-Youth Development Affairs.

 
 
 
   
   
   
     
 

MCL recently concluded an announced fire drill last September 27, 2007 in coordination with the Cabuyao Fire Station led by FO2 Domingo L. Manuud II and was witnessed by the Municipal Fire Marshall Sr. Inspector Edwin P. Vargas.  The whole building was evacuated in 3 minutes and 46 seconds.  The fire truck arrived 5 minutes and 40 seconds after the call was made to the fire station.

The Center for Student Activities and Discipline of Malayan Colleges Laguna finally accredited 13 student organizations last August. The organizations, established by MCL’s Alpha Batch, were classified as academic, cultural, civic, and spiritual in nature. The recognition of these organizations aimed at giving the students the opportunity to establish their respective independent groups and use their free time in productive ways. Furthermore, varied nature of the organizations will provide them with more venues for developing their individual skills and interests, more challenging activities, and complement the MCL environment with their progressive undertakings.

 
 
 
     
   
   
     
 

The MCL community gathered at the Francisco Balagtas Auditorium last August 21, 2007 to celebrate its inauguration and blessing.  The program started at 1:30pm with a mass officiated by Fr. Reggie Mamaril, the parish priest of St. Joseph Parish at Canlubang, Laguna.   It was  followed by the blessing of the hall. The Eucharistic Celebration was sponsored by the Manfil Choir and some of the MCL-YFC members participated as servers and commentator.    The mass ended at  about 2:30pm

 
 
 
     
   
   
     
 

Malayan Colleges Laguna hosted the formal launch of the Adopt –A-School Program last August 2, 2007 at the second floor of the E.T. Yuchengco Hall.  Through this Adopt-A-School Program, the consortium composed of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc., PetroEnergy Resources Corporation, the Department of Education and Malayan Colleges Laguna shall endeavor to deliver various literacy enhancement projects in the region, particularly focused in the areas of math and science. 

 
 
 
     
   
  MCL ACADEMICIANS IN VARIOUS FACULTY DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES  
     
 

Last 18 July 2007, Prof. James Ronald O. Mesina and Ms. Ma. Paz Collado, director of the Center for Learning and Information Resources attended the National Conference on the State of Philippine Competitiveness 2007 organized by the Asian Institute of Management. The National Conference was held at the New World Renaissance Hotel in Makati City. Issues tackled in the conference include the declining the competitiveness of the Philippines in the fields of business, employment, education, and technology.

  ETY-CB FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY (27 June 2007)  
     
  The Business Students had their First General Assembly last Wednesday, June 27, 2007 from 12:00 to 2:00pm at R207 of the Rizal Hall.  The General Assembly (GA) started with a prayer followed by a brain twisting icebreaker which everyone enjoyed, then it proceeded with the meeting proper.  The GA was intended to inform the students of the objectives of the E.T. Yuchengco College of Business (ETY-CB).  
 
 
     
   
  MCL FRESHMEN: STARTING ON THEIR JOURNEY TO SUCCESS (18 June 2007)  
     
 

The Chinese scholar Laozi said that “a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step”.  Full of hope, enthusiasm, and big dreams, 854 Freshmen students of Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) took that first step on 18 June 2007 as classes for the academic year 2007-2008 officially began.

  MCL PLAYS HOST TO PIL-TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN REGION 4A  
     
 

Last 4-9 June 2007, a total of 40 teachers from Region 4A and the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) attended the TECHNICAL VOCATION TRAINING sponsored by the Department of Education and Microsoft Philippines. Malayan Colleges Laguna hosted the venue of the training program.

 
 
 
     
  ROBOTICS BOOT CAMP 2007 (21 – 26 May 2007)  
     
 

Almost a hundred high-school students from over thirty (30) secondary schools all over Laguna participated in the first-ever Robotics Boot Camp 2007 held at Malayan Colleges Laguna from 21 to 26 May 2007.

 
 
 
     
   
  MCL CONDUCTS SUMMER TEACHERS TRAINING WITH MICROSOFT  
     
 

Malayan Colleges Laguna recently conducted the SUMMER TEACHERS’ TRAINING in partnership with Microsoft Philippines through its PARTNERS IN LEARNING (PIL) program. MCL served as the venue in a week long training for four sessions. Four sessions were organized to accommodate the number of participants. These were held from 23-27 April 2007, 1-5 May 2007, 7-11 May 2007, and 21-25 May 2007.

  In line with MCL’s commitment to enhance the personal and professional formation of employees and maintain camaraderie among employees, a teambuilding workshop was held at the Riverview Resort & Conference Center at Calamba, Laguna last April 2& 3, 2007.  
 
 
     
     
  MALAYAN COLLEGES LAGUNA HOLDS INAUGURATION AND BLESSING (MARCH 2007)  
     
  29 March 2007 is a momentous event in the history of Malayan Colleges Laguna as this date marks its Inauguration Day and Blessing. Incorporated in 23 January 2006, MCL aspires to be one of the leading colleges/universities in Southern Luzon offering programs in Engineering, Information Technology, and Business.  
 
 
     
  MCL HOSTS 2007 SCIENCE EXHIBIT IN LAGUNA (JANUARY 2007)  
     
  The first ever SCIENCE EXHIBIT in LAGUNA was held on 15-19 January 2007 with the Malayan Colleges Laguna and the various divisions of the Department of Education in the province of Laguna sponsoring the event.  
 
 
     
   
  SPELLING QUIZ BEE WINNER DECLARED (JANUARY 2007)  
     
  The 2007 Science Exhibit sponsored by Malayan Colleges Laguna culminated at around four in the afternoon of 16 January 2007 with San Lorenzo School winning the 2007 Spelling Quiz Show.  
 
 
     
   
  HOLY ROSARY COLLEGE OF STA. ROSA, INC. EMERGES VICTORIOUS IN PHYSICS QUIZ SHOW (JANUARY 2007)  
     
  Part of the activities during the 2007 Science Exhibit sponsored by Malayan Colleges Laguna was the conduct of the 2007 PHYSICS QUIZ SHOW. The fifteenth of January is an unforgettable moment in the lives of three High School students who represented the Holy Rosary College of Sta. Rosa, Inc. as they emerged winners of the said contest.
